British Curriculum

The British curriculum sets out Early Learning Goals for the Revised Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) within seven areas of learning. We utilize a variety of fun and engaging methods to teach our students these areas of development, including interactive activities and songs. The areas of learning and development are broken down into three prime areas:

The prime areas are further strengthened and applied by the following areas:

Communication and Language

Children enjoy a variety of speaking and listening activities to enhance their language development. Active listening is practiced daily during story time, where children are encouraged to discuss the story and relate it to their own experiences. Children also learn new vocabulary from the academic themes they absorb throughout the day. Additionally, circle time helps to develop the child’s confidence and social development. Role play is another activity that teaches children how to express themselves and communicate effectively in different situations.

Physical Development

Children are encouraged to move with coordination, confidence and imagination to develop their motor skills. Physical Education is a required component in our curriculum as it allows children to play with balls and other equipment as well as engage in dance movements. For fine motor skills, children learn pencil control and are also encouraged to work with blocks, puzzles, play dough and threading activities. Other activities include teaching our children to look after their bodies and the importance of physical exercise, healthy food and personal safety.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Pre-School is a place where children learn to socialize by making friends with their peers and develop positive relationships with both children and adults. Developing social skills is one of the most important aspects of our curriculum and children are encouraged to be independent, to manage their feelings, and to understand and engage in appropriate behavior when playing or working with others. Positive reinforcement is key in developing personal, social and emotional development; every child is made to feel special and encouraged to have self-confidence. Our school rules are posted in each classroom and it’s there to teach our children to be polite to others and behave in a positive manner.

Literacy

Children are introduced to various mathematical concepts, like: counting skills, number recognition and measurement, in a fun and interactive way through songs, rhymes, games and activities. Group and individual based activities also include matching, sorting, sequencing, recreating simple patterns, learning to recognize and describe basic shapes, which also helps develop the child’s problem-solving skills.

Understanding the World

Children are always encouraged to talk about themselves, their family, where they come from, and special events in their lives. Circle time, which includes a section called “Show and Tell” allows children to showcase an important aspect of their life, thereby helping students gain confidence. Each class covers a specific topic, providing many opportunities for social interaction, language development, and creative expression. Parents are asked to get involved but sending in related objects of interest, discussing the themes, and singing the songs at home with their child. Children will also be taken on field trips to reinforce the variety of themes taught in the classroom.

Expressive Arts and Design

Children are able to explore and play with a variety of materials. They enjoy opportunities and encouragement to share their thoughts, ideas, and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, dancing and role play. Free painting and drawing enable them to express themselves and develops their creativity. Every day, all children take part in singing and learn new songs related to the current theme.

Parent & Teacher Relationship

It is extremely important to foster a positive parent – teacher relationship in order for your child to develop in the most appropriate manner. Therefore, it is vital to have regular contact with parents to ensure effective communication. Our staff understand that most parents have children attending school for the fist time, therefore the staff want to be able to develop a healthy working relationship to ensure that the parent and child are content.

Parents are more than welcome to call or come to the school to ask about their child. Our teachers are available every day at the end of the day to give feedback to parents and are available for a more in-depth discussion by appointment. Additionally, towards the beginning of the year, there will be an open house at school where parents are invited to tour the school, view their child’s work, and have an informal meeting with the teachers to discuss their child’s progress.
